Digital Currency: Swiss Franc's Path Digitalization

Share

Financial history has reached a defining moment. Central banks worldwide are exploring digital currency initiatives, and Switzerland has become a pivotal player in this transformation.

The Swiss Franc continues its digital progress. Switzerland pioneers financial breakthroughs through central bank digital currency development, carefully balancing traditional banking strengths with digital transformation.

Evolution of Swiss Currency

Switzerland launched a digital Swiss franc pilot in December 2023, marking a significant step toward modernizing the traditional currency system with real-life transactions.

Traditional Swiss Franc's Digital Journey

The Swiss National Bank's Project Helvetia stands as one of the most important milestones, enabling wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) operations on the regulated SIX Digital Exchange. The pilot program will run until at least June 2026 and expand gradually through multiple phases, integrating distributed ledger technology, wholesale CBDC implementation, and blockchain-based solutions.

Global Digital Currency Rate

A recent survey shows that 93% of central banks worldwide participate in CBDC experiments. China has tested its digital renminbi since April 2021, the European Central Bank wants to introduce the e-euro by 2026, and countries like Sweden, Singapore, and the Bahamas are also advancing their digital currency initiatives.

Switzerland's Strategic Position

Switzerland leads global digital finance with its reliable ecosystem - the fintech and blockchain sector includes over 1,000 companies. Switzerland became one of the first countries to enact detailed legal regulations for blockchain technology on August 1, 2021, creating an ideal balance between innovation and security.

Technical Infrastructure

Blockchain Integration Challenges

More than 80% of Swiss banks actively develop or expand their blockchain offerings, and over 60% pursue concrete plans for cryptocurrencies.

Security Architecture

The Swiss system is protected with state-of-the-art Hardware Security Modules (HSMs), featuring advanced encryption key management systems, digital signature verification protocols, and immediate threat monitoring. The Primus HSM system, developed and manufactured in Switzerland, delivers exceptional performance while meeting stringent security requirements.

Interoperability Solutions

The system handles transactions across multiple currencies, including domestic Swiss transactions and cross-border payments in US dollars, Swiss francs, Euros, and Chinese yuan. The next generation Swiss Interbank Clearing System (SIC) enables 24/7 processing and completes transactions in just 10 seconds, using smart contracts and blockchain technology.

Public Impact Assessment

Customer Adoption Readiness

About 70-80% of the population shows reluctance to pay for digital services such as electronic signatures or data exchange, though people who have tried digital services tend to support them more (73%) compared to those who haven't (59%).

Privacy Concerns

About one-third of the population has specific data protection concerns: 38% worry about tax-related data security, 36% express general concerns, and 33% have reservations about electronic data exchange with authorities.

Financial Inclusion Opportunities

Digital currency shows great promise to improve financial inclusion, especially in emerging and developing economies, bringing convenience, better accessibility, and new possibilities for economic participation.

Implementation Roadmap

Pilot Programs and Testing

Project Helvetia Phase III started in December 2023 and ran through June 2024, bringing together the Swiss National Bank, SIX Digital Exchange, and six commercial banks. Six digital bonds worth more than CHF 750 million were issued, all settled in wholesale CBDC - making Switzerland the world's first central bank to conduct live monetary policy operations on regulated DLT infrastructure.

Regulatory Framework Development

A consultation draft implements the expanded Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) standards, covering revision of the Common Reporting Standard (CRS), implementation of the new Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF), and improvement of tax transparency mechanisms.

Digital Evolution in Banking

Establish a DLT Integration Lab

Swiss banks should create dedicated DLT labs to simulate real-world tokenization scenarios, validate interoperability between tokenized assets and core banking platforms, and enhance operational preparedness.

Design Specialized Corporate Wallets

Swiss banks should develop secure, purpose-built wallets tailored to sophisticated business needs, facilitating real-time digital transactions for supply chain finance, cross-border trading, and automated treasury operations.

Tokenize Investment Products & Build Digital Asset Infrastructure

Swiss banks should progressively introduce tokenized investment products, enabling faster settlement, fractional ownership, and greater accessibility, investing in cold wallets, smart escrow services, and compliance-ready custody systems aligned with FINMA standards.

Our Approach

FORFIRM integrates Lean Management, Organizational Optimization, and BPR to streamline banking operations, boost efficiency, and create an adaptive organizational culture through structured transformation phases.

  • Regulatory Gap Analysis - Evaluate current policies against crypto-asset and AML regulations, identify compliance gaps, and benchmark against industry standards.
  • Crypto Risk & AML Framework Definition - Establish internal policies, roles, and escalation procedures, defining governance and risk thresholds tailored to crypto-assets.
  • Implementation of KYC and CDD Tools - Deploy identity verification tools adapted to crypto environments and apply enhanced due diligence for high-risk transactions.
  • Crypto Transaction Monitoring - Integrate blockchain analytics and AML monitoring systems for real-time oversight.
  • Suspicious Transaction Reporting (STR) Policy - Define internal processes for identifying and reporting suspicious activities.
  • Regulatory Communication & Auditing - Set up reporting channels with regulators and schedule regular compliance reviews.
